GRAND BASS EXAMPLE:
History: The Gemshorn is an ancient musical instrument from the Scandinavian countries in Europe from the 15th Century. Examples have been unearthed in Italy, Hungary and in Germany. They were primarily a pastoral instrument and were not widely known after the mid-to-late 16th century. With resurgent interest in early music in the 19th and 20th centuries, they have received new attention.
The Sound: Hearing the Gemshorn is a bit like going back in history. It’s a beautiful sound. Being in the ocarina family of instruments, it has a very aquatic sound with a clear voice. Acoustic engineers call the instrument “Pure Notes” with mean they don’t have many accompanying harmonic notes. In common words, the Gemshorn’s sound is very clear and focused.
Construction: Caleb uses the essential construction of the original construction of this instrument, except he uses a more stable material for the mouthpiece, mahogany or walnut wood. The mouthpiece is made of wood, then attached to the open end of a cow horn. Holes are drilled at specific parts of the horn to create a major scale.
Tuning: The tuning is in a major scale, which plays exactly like a recorder, with seven holes on top and one thumb hole. Please see chart below for the way we tune our Gemshorns.
Leather Bag: Our cases are made with high quality, genuine leather. The case is designed to protect the Gemshorn from being damaged when traveling or to store when not being used. The case is custom fit to the exact size of your Gemshorn. A leather strap allows you to carry it on your shoulder. Note: We typically carry leather colors: gray, dark gray, tan, brown and black. Our colors of leather may vary depending on availability therefore we cannot give the option to choose what color you would like. But we will make sure it matches the style and look of your Gemshorn.
